Field photographs, 1949.

Photographs documenting Dr. Murphy's work in Pyramid Valley Swamp where 64 Moa skeletons were extracted in March 1949, 15 of which came to the American Museum of Natural History. Photographs show the excavation work, the land, and bird life. Photographs were taken by Murphy. Copy photographs by Leon Boltin.

Dr. and Mrs. Robert Cushman Murphy attended the Seventh Pacific Science Congress in New Zealand from Feb. 1 to mid-April 1949. While there Dr. Murphy returned to Pyramid Valley Swamp, North Canterbury where he had worked while on the American Museum of Natural History New Zealand Expedition, 1947-1948. The 1949 work in Pyramid Valley Swamp was shared with the Canterbury Museum. Dr. Murphy was assisted by Dr. R.A. Falla of the Dominican Museum. From the description of Field photograph...
